Dr. Lilly presented information about Provenge, the first FDA approved (2010) prostate cancer vaccine.

This drug has  extended the life of patients with seriously advanced prostate cancer.  It is a treatment for men who are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic, metastatic (wide spread), hormonal refractory (resistant), very advanced prostate cancer disease; its use has few side effects.

Men will now have access to Provenge, the first cancer drug to use the body’s own immune system to fight prostate cancer. Dr. Lilly discussed the eligibility criteria for patients for whom this treatment would benefit.

He also told us of other cancer vaccines for more effective treatments which hopefully will soon arrive on the scene.  Dr. Lilly’s interests include improving chemotherapies and directing special laboratory studies as an oncologist practicing at UCI Medical Center.

Christopher Saigal, M.D, MPH.

Dr. Saigal spoke at the Prostate Forum on May 23, 2013, at 7 PM. Our video #475 refers.

Subject: MRI Guided Biopsy of the Prostate.

Hear Dr. Saigal speak about the latest imaging technology and how to make active surveillance a safe alternative to invasive treatments for prostate cancer.

For more than a quarter-century, transrectal ultrasound has been the standard imaging technique for systematic prostate biopsies. However, modern MRI provides superior resolution that could substantially improve prostate cancer detection.

The technique, which fuses MRI images with ultrasound, could revolutionize prostate cancer detection and supplant ultrasound-guided biopsies, which have been the standard of care for 25 years.

Targeted prostate biopsy with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tripled the cancer yield compared with conventional systematic biopsies. MRI-targeted lesions contained biopsy-proven prostate cancer 21% of the time, whereas systematic biopsy detected cancer just 7% of the time according to reports (source: Journal of Urology)

The technique has potentially widespread applicability to prostate cancer detection and for monitoring men who opt for active surveillance of clinically low-risk prostate cancer.

Dr. Saigal is an Associate professor and vice chair of the Department of Urology at UCLA. His surgical practice is at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Westwood. He serves as the Department of Urology Director of Health Services Research, as well as Director of Innovation.

ultrasound with CT or MRI and 4-dimensional navigation technologies in urology. He is also internationally
recognized for his experience in the management of lower urinary tract dysfunction and laparoscopic surgery. At USC, Dr Ukimura has built the country's first dedicated Center for Image-Guided Surgery & Focal Therapy. His team's cutting-edge research is developing innovative new,high-precision, focal therapies for prostate cancer.
