Mr. Benard will present the newest capabilities and applications for their Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. He will discuss the differences between MRI and CAT scans with data regarding recent advancements for MRI. He will also elaborate on who should and who should not utilize MRI imaging.
Perhaps the most important capability with these new MRI systems is the ability to use the image for greater precision in guiding the biopsy needle, The use of these advanced tools for real time image analysis should return fewer negatives when there really is a prostate cancer tumor present.

The Forum was pleased to again welcome Dr. Galen and Linda Bird as featured speakers at our evening meeting on February 24, 2011!
At the age of 63, Galen was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a radical prostatectomy which caused him erectile dysfunction (ED) and incontinence. Both Galen and Linda suffered from these complications until Galen received an inflatable penile prosthesis and at the same time, also an artificial urinary sphincter.
Galen & Linda Bird often travel throughout the US to share their experiences and letting others know about the available solutions to ED and incontinence .

Subject: UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACHES & NEW IDEAS FOR TREATING PROSTATE CANCER (prca)
Dr. Tanya Dorff brings new information on unique techniques for dealing with prca issues. She will present the outcomes of a clinical trial using herbal materials for prca therapy; these data were enthusiastically greeted at the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Feb 2012.
Dr. Dorff will also talk about her work with using fasting to reduce chemotherapy toxicity. Additionally she will show her results with testosterone replacement therapy for prca survivors who have had prior therapy. She will also present some new prca ideas, which are just on the horizon. Her interests are both in molecular studies to advance cancer therapy effectiveness, and also combination herbal supplements to treat recurrent (rising PSA) prca.
Dr. Dorff is on the medical staff at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Gelman is an Urologist in practice at UC, Irvine. He is Fellowship trained and specializes (exclusively) in male penile and urethral disorders. A large portion of his practice involves the treatment of the complications of prostate cancer surgery, radiation and/or HIFU.

Dr. Michael Lilly spoke at the Prostate Forum on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 7 pm
Subject: PROVENGE & OTHER PROSTATE CANCER VACCINES
Dr. Lilly presented information about Provenge, the first FDA approved (2010) prostate cancer vaccine.
This drug has extended the life of patients with seriously advanced prostate cancer. It is a treatment for men who are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic, metastatic (wide spread), hormonal refractory (resistant), very advanced prostate cancer disease; its use has few side effects.
Men will now have access to Provenge, the first cancer drug to use the body’s own immune system to fight prostate cancer. Dr. Lilly discussed the eligibility criteria for patients for whom this treatment would benefit.
He also told us of other cancer vaccines for more effective treatments which hopefully will soon arrive on the scene. Dr. Lilly’s interests include improving chemotherapies and directing special laboratory studies as an oncologist practicing at UCI Medical Center.
Dr. Mark Moyad is the featured speaker at the Prostate Forum of Orange County on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 7 PM after moderating the PCRI conference in Los Angeles, September 7-9.

Dr. Rose is a Radiation Oncologist and is Medical Director for the Center of Radiation Therapy of Beverly Hills. He is also the Chief Technical Officer of the Vantage Oncology Group in Manhattan Beach, CA. Dr. Jeffrey Turner is a native of Southern California, having grown up in Orange County and attended the University of Southern California. He was the first student to graduate USC’s 3-year accelerated science program with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences. Subsequently, he was employed as a research associate at UCLA in infectious diseases and molecular biology.
His medical education and residency were both completed in Canada. His medical degree was at Memorial University of Newfoundland in eastern Canada and more recently, he completed Internal Medicine residency at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC on the opposite coast. The year after completion of his postgraduate training, he was employed as a hospitalist in Laguna Beach and Los Angeles. Dr. Turner completed his medical oncology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina with a focus on genitourinary oncology with several research projects and publications focusing on prostate and renal cell carcinoma.
Dr. Turner is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Internal Medicine & Medical Oncology.

Spoke at the Forum on April 28, 2011 on the above subject.
Martin Weissman, M.D. will guide us through the complexities of dealing with prostate cancer in all of its variants. As he suggests, there are many ways in which we can draw erroneous conclusions or misunderstand what we hear.
In presenting “Navigating the Shoals of Prostate Cancer (and BPH)” he will show us how to avoid the pitfalls and mistakes when encountering bad information and how to effectively collect and track important data. He will demonstrate some newly available tools for diagnosis & outcome prediction, and how to evaluate the reliability of some information sources.
He will have suggestions for asking questions: of yourself, your doctors and support groups. Additionally, he will explain some of the very complex protocols available today. Dr. Weissman is on the staff at St Joseph Hospital in Orange where he is Medical Director of their Prostate Oncology Department.
